Using the model
Symbols, assumptions and limitations
Both masses must use the same unit. Total solution mass must be positive and includes solute plus solvent; zero solute is valid and gives 0% by mass.
Worked examples
See the method in practice
Five-percent solution
5 g solute in 100 g solution is 5% by mass.
Solvent versus solution
5 g solute plus 95 g solvent gives 100 g solution.
Questions
Frequently asked
Is mass percent the same as molarity?
No. Mass percent is a mass ratio; molarity is moles of solute per litre of solution.
Can the two masses use different units?
Convert them to the same mass unit before dividing.
