Scientific Notation on a Calculator

Enter, compare, and interpret very large and very small numbers without exponent errors.

Scientific notation writes a number as a coefficient between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten.

Use the exponent key

Enter 6.02 × 10²³ as 6.02e23. The exponent key is not the same as raising the preceding value to a power.

Handle negative exponents

The number 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ is entered as 1.6e-19; keep the exponent sign separate from subtraction.

Compare magnitudes

Compare exponents first. For equal exponents, compare coefficients.
