One wave, two complementary measures

Wavelength λ is the spatial distance between repeating phases of a wave. Frequency f counts cycles per second. For electromagnetic radiation in vacuum, their product is the defined speed of light c.

Because c is fixed, wavelength and frequency vary inversely: doubling one halves the other.

Energy arrives in photons

Planck’s relation assigns each photon an energy proportional to frequency. Combining it with the wave equation makes energy inversely proportional to wavelength.

The Planck constant and speed of light are exact in the current SI. Experimental uncertainty normally enters through the measured wavelength or frequency.

A visible-light example

Convert nanometers to meters before using SI constants. A wavelength of 500 nm is 5.00 × 10⁻⁷ m.

Worked check

The joule-to-electron-volt conversion uses 1 eV = 1.602176634 × 10⁻¹⁹ J exactly.

Vacuum, media, and interpretation

Inside a material, wave speed and wavelength change while frequency is fixed at a boundary. The simple calculator uses vacuum relations and should not be used as a substitute for a material’s dispersion model.

Photon energy describes an individual quantum. Total beam energy also depends on how many photons arrive.
